Senators buy out Cheechoo's contract

06/29/2010 - Ottawa, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Ottawa Senators bought out the final year of forward Jonathan Cheechoo's contract on Tuesday.

Cheechoo's deal was done at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.

"Jonathan is a quality person and hockey player," said Senators general manager Bryan Murray. "We hoped that things would have worked out with the Senators. In the best interest of us both, we have decided to move on. We wish him all the best."

Cheechoo's production has decreased each year since winning the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the league's top goal scorer in 2006. In his lone season with Ottawa last year, the 29-year-old recorded just five goals and nine assists in 61 games.

The Moose Factory, Ontario native totaled 56 goals with San Jose in 2005-06 and spent his first six seasons with the Sharks, compiling double-digit goals five times. He has 170 goals and 135 assists in 501 career games.

The Senators acquired the 6-foot-1, 200-pound right winger from San Jose in a four-player trade that sent forward Dany Heatley to the Sharks.

Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season.  Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.
