04/01/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Nashville Predators will try to break out of an offensive slump this evening at Bridgestone Arena, where they host a St. Louis Blues team that will be aiming to keep its fading playoff chances alive with a fourth victory in a row.
Nashville is coming off Tuesday's 2-0 setback to Los Angeles that dropped the club to 2-2-1 since a six-game winning streak. The Predators have been shut out twice in their last three games and have scored just a single goal in their last three losses.
"I thought the first period they were all over us," said Preds head coach Barry Trotz. "We weren't quite engaged in the game as much as we needed to be. I think between the first and second the guys realized that and they stepped it up, and I thought the second we had lots of chances and the third we had some more chances. But we just couldn't get one by."
Pekka Rinne did his best to keep Nashville in it on Tuesday, making 29 saves. The Preds, though, are now just one point up on Detroit for the fifth seed in the Western Conference with four games to play. They visit Detroit on Saturday and have played two more games than the Red Wings, who host Columbus this evening.
Nashville, which missed the playoffs for the first time in five seasons last year, is also seven points behind Chicago for first place in the Central Division. The Blackhawks, though, have played two fewer games than the Preds.
The Predators have won three of four versus the Blues this year, winning all three matchups at St. Louis. However, the Blues notched a 3-1 win at Nashville in November and have won three of the last four played in the Music City.
These two clubs close out their respective regular seasons against each other on April 10.
Rinne has been in net for all four games versus the Blues this season, posting a 2.27 goals-against average and .920 save percentage. He is 5-2-1 with a 2.34 GAA in eight lifetime starts against St. Louis.
The Blues kept their slim playoff hopes alive on Tuesday with a 4-2 triumph over the Blackhawks. Alexander Steen had two goals for the fourth time this year, including the go-ahead tally in the third period, to go along with an assist, while Eric Brewer scored the game-tying goal in the second frame.
"I think there was a time in the first [period] where we weren't really there, and I thought we picked it up again in the second and third and played a solid game," said Steen.
Chris Mason stopped 32 shots and Erik Johnson also scored for St. Louis, which lost Paul Kariya to a lower-body injury in the first period. Kariya is considered day-to-day and is not expected to play in this game against one of his former teams.
Despite the three-game win streak, St. Louis is six points back of Colorado for the eighth spot in the West with six games to play.
Steen leads the Blues with 23 goals, which is also a career high. He has also set a new personal mark for points with 46, while Mason posted his 27th win of the season to match his career best set last year.
Mason, a former Predator, is 1-3-0 with a 2.53 GAA and .930 save percentage against his old club this season.
