02/17/2010 - Richmond, VA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The best and the worst that the Atlantic 10 Conference has to offer clash in Virginia tonight, as the 25th-ranked Richmond Spiders entertain the woeful Fordham Rams.
The Spiders have woven their way into the AP Poll for just the second time since 1958 and this marks only the sixth week in school history that the squad has been a part of the national rankings. The last time that took place was 1986, and prior to that it had been nearly three decades since the team had been so recognized.
With a 9-2 record in A-10 action, Richmond entered the week in sole possession of first place in the league standings, with Temple, Charlotte and Xavier all close behind. The squad won its sixth straight and eighth in the last nine outings on Saturday with a 68-49 defeat of St. Bonaventure on the road. More encouraging for the Spiders is that they are at home tonight where they have won all but one of their 12 outings.
At the other end of the league's success spectrum are the Rams who have logged a grand total of just two wins this entire season, and those came against the likes of Sacred Heart and Stony Brook. Since that 93-77 victory over Stony Brook in early December, the team has dropped 16 consecutive outings, so needless to say the team is winless in conference thus far. On Saturday, it was more of the same for Fordham as it suffered a 78-53 setback to George Washington at home.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Fordham actually leads at the moment by a count of 8-6, although the Rams have not won since March of 2007. The most recent decision was a 78-68 victory for the Spiders last season.
After shooting just 35.7 percent from the field in the first half against George Washington over the weekend, it only got worse for the Rams as they converted a total of six field goals after the break. Alberto Estwick came off the bench to post a team-best 12 points, followed by Brenton Butler with 11 points, but he shot just 1-of-11 from the floor and 1-of-8 behind the three- point line. Herb Tanner tacked on 10 points and Chris Gaston a team-high 13 rebounds in the lost cause. For a team that has been everything but successful this season, it is somewhat amazing to see Gaston averaging a double-double with 17.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per contest, while Butler checks in with 15.9 ppg as a mere 33.2 percent shooter from the floor. As a unit, the Rams have made good on just 37.2 percent from the field and 27.3 percent behind the three-point line, the former number ranking the team second-to-last in the nation entering the week.
David Gonzalvez carried the load for the Spiders over the weekend as he tallied 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 at the free- throw line in the team's 20th win of the campaign. Adding to his stat line, Gonzalvez also logged five rebounds, five steals and three assists as well. Justin Harper came up a rebound shy of a double-double as he posted 14 points as the only other double-digit scorer for Richmond. Gonzalvez, the leading scorer in three of the last four outings for the Spiders, is currently second on the team with his 13.8 ppg but is the most reliable long-distance shooter with his 54 three-point conversions. Kevin Anderson checks in with 17.2 ppg and is also first with 66 assists and 49 steals, which means he is always willing to put forth a strong effort at both ends of the floor. At the moment, the Spiders are holding foes to just 60.0 ppg, limiting them to 38.3 percent shooting from the field and a paltry 28.7 percent behind the three-point line.
