Reds shuffle roster to make room for Volquez

07/17/2010 - Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Cincinnati Reds officially activated right-hander Edinson Volquez to make his season debut against the Rockies Saturday.

Volquez, who had been out because of both Tommy John surgery and a 50-game suspension for a violation of the league's drug policy, last appeared in a major league game on June 1, 2009.

The 27-year-old lost about $120,000 of his $445,000 salary for the suspension, which was served while he recovered from his elbow injury. In six rehab starts in the minors, Volquez went 4-0 with a 1.45 earned run average.

In 42 career games for Cincinnati, Volquez is 21-8 with a 3.44 ERA. He was acquired from the Rangers before the 2008 season in a deal that sent Josh Hamilton to Texas.

To accommodate the move, Cincinnati optioned pitcher Matt Maloney to Triple-A Louisville. He lost both his starts for the Reds this season and pitched to a 3.09 ERA.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Reds transferred pitcher Mike Lincoln to the 60-day disabled list.
