Indians designate C Redmond, bring up Gimenez

07/10/2010 - St. Petersburg, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Cleveland Indians have designated veteran catcher Mike Redmond for assignment and recalled catcher/infielder Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus.

Redmond was hitting .206 with five runs batted in over 63 at-bats this season. He was signed as a free agent by the Tribe in January with the design of serving as a mentor and tutor to Lou Marson, who is now in the minor leagues.

He served as Joe Mauer's backup in Minnesota from 2005-2009 and did not commit an error during that time.

In 13 seasons in the majors -- seven with the Florida Marlins -- the 39- year-old Redmond is a .287 hitter with 13 homers and 243 RBI. He was a member of the Marlins' 2003 World Series championship club, as well as the Twins' 2006 and '09 AL Central Division winners.

Gimenez was batting .276 with nine homers and 32 RBI in 55 games for the Clippers this year.

He played in 45 games for the Indians last season, hitting just .144 with three long balls and seven runs drive in.
