10/13/2007 - San Jose, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Colt Brennan hit Jason Rivers with a nine-yard touchdown pass in the first overtime, as 16th-ranked Hawaii overcame a 14- point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat San Jose State, 42-35, at Spartan Stadium.
Brennan had an up-and-down night, completing 44-of-75 passes for 545 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions for Hawaii (7-0, 4-0 WAC), which remains one of the country's 11 undefeated FBS teams heading into this weekend. The Heisman hopeful also ran for the game-tying touchdown with 31 seconds left in regulation, completing a surge of two touchdowns in a 3:23 span.
Ryan Grice-Mullen led a trio of receivers with huge games for the Rainbow Warriors, hauling in 14 passes for 175 yards with a touchdown. Davone Bess added 12 catches for 140 yards with a score and Rivers tallied 12 receptions for 138 yards to go along with his TD.
Adam Tafralis went 27-of-47 for 302 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Spartans (3-4, 2-1), who had a three-game win streak halted. Kevin Jurovich added seven catches for 117 yards with two scores for San Jose State, which overcame a 14-0 deficit only to blow a 35-21 lead late in regulation.
Down 35-21 late in the fourth quarter, Brennan kept his Heisman hopes alive by rallying his team with a pair of touchdowns inside the final four minutes.
The first TD drive started at Hawaii's own three-yard-line and ended with Brennan hitting Bess with an 11-yard TD pass with 3:54 left. A pair of 15- yard penalties on SJSU aided the Warriors' drive.
All San Jose State needed to do with its ensuing possession was run out the clock. Hawaii had just one timeout remaining, but with 2:56, James Collier, who earlier scored a touchdown, fumbled the ball and Adam Leonard recovered at the Spartans' 45.
Seven plays later Brennan hit C.J. Hawthorne with a 12-yard pass to bring the ball down to the two-yard-line. From there, Brennan ran in untouched, tying the game with 31 seconds to play and forcing overtime.
Hawaii began the first OT with the ball and Brennan capitalized, hitting Jason Rivers with a nine-yard TD pass in the front left corner of the end zone four plays in.
Then, on the second play of the Spartans' possession, Myron Newberry picked off Tafralis' pass in the end zone.
Hawaii got going right away, taking advantage of a Tafralis interception and turning it into seven points. Leonard picked off Tafralis and returned it 28 yards to the San Jose State 35-yard-line. Seven plays later, Kealoha Pilares ran in from six yards out for the early lead with 11:18 left in the opening quarter.
Will Johnson missed a 47-yard field goal early in the second quarter for the Spartans, and later in the quarter Brennan hit Grice-Mullen for a 16-yard TD with 8:24 on the clock for a 14-0 lead.
The Spartans began to get back into the game in the second quarter thanks to Dwight Lowery. With 1:21 left in the half, Lowery returned a Hawaii punt 84 yards for a score.
Brennan responded by driving his team into field goal range, but Dan Kelly missed a 48-yarder in the final seconds of the half and Hawaii went into the break with a seven-point lead.
Lowery was at it again in the third quarter. On Hawaii's first play of the half, Lowery picked off the QB and ran 23 yards for the game-tying touchdown.
Brennan's struggles continued on the ensuing possession, getting intercepted for a second time in the game at the Spartans' two-yard-line by Andrew Ryan, who returned it to the 17.
San Jose State went three-and-out, but Brennan's squad turned the ball over again, this time on downs, after the QB failed to get a first down on fourth and inches at the SJS 35.
The Spartans then needed just under two minutes to go the distance to take the lead for good. The drive was started with a 23-yard pass play, and a 15-yard pass interference penalty that followed brought the ball deep into Hawaii territory. Later, Tafralis hit Jurovich for a 16-yard TD that made it 21-14 with 5:26 left.
The stagnant Hawaii offense then went three-and-out, giving the ball back to the surging Spartans at their own 13-yard-line. Four plays later, Tafralis hooked up with Jurovich on a 68-yard catch-and-run TD for a 14-point cushion.
The teams then exchanged touchdowns. Brennan hit Hawthorne in the back of the end zone from 34 yards out with 1:15 left in the third quarter to draw his club within seven points. However, Callier's nine-yard TD run 2:27 into the fourth quarter restored the Spartans' lead.
